About

“Afrika” is the spelling of the English word Africa in the Malagasy language. The artwork is composed of a map of Africa with a profile of a woman with a Malagasy traditional braided hairstyle inside and her eyes are closed. I chose to depict Africa as a woman to celebrate her as the Motherland. “Afrika” is strong, beautiful, intelligent, selfless, caring, and full of wisdom like a mother. With her eyes closed, she is in a state of reflecting on her inner self and the people she cares about. The artwork is meant to celebrate all mothers for what they do to ensure a brighter future and survival for their children and the world we all live in.
